Dent County is deep Ozark timber country, where hardwood ridges and pine flats give way to the spring-fed headwaters of the Current River. Much of the county lies within or beside Mark Twain National Forest, making it a stronghold for buyers who want big timbered blocks, hard-hunted whitetail and turkey, and access to public ground. The thin, cherty soils favor pasture and hay in the valleys, with cattle the working use of choice. Cold springs feed blue-ribbon trout water and clear floating streams that draw recreational interest year-round. Anchored by Salem, the county is well suited to a hunting retreat, a cattle-and-timber place, or a recreational tract with cold water and heavy cover.
