Douglas County is rugged, heavily timbered Ozark country drained by the North Fork River and Bryant Creek, two of the region's finest spring-fed streams. Oak-hickory and shortleaf pine cover the steep ridges and hollows, with much of the county lying in or beside Mark Twain National Forest. Buyers come for big timbered blocks, cold clear water, and some of the strongest whitetail and turkey hunting in the highlands. The thin, rocky soils keep the working ground in pasture, hay, and cattle down in the valleys. Anchored by Ava, Douglas suits a deep-woods hunting retreat, a trout-and-float tract on cold water, or a cattle place backed up against national forest.
