Reynolds County is among the most heavily timbered counties in Missouri, a deep-woods stronghold of the Ozarks where forest still covers the great majority of the ground. The Black River runs clear and cold through the hills, and the terrain climbs into the rugged St. Francois Mountains along its northern edge, including the well-known shut-ins country. This is timber and recreation land first, with steep oak-hickory and shortleaf pine ridges, hollows, and glades that hold strong populations of deer and turkey. Cattle and hay ground fill the broader valleys. With Mark Twain National Forest woven throughout and float streams close at hand, Reynolds County suits the buyer after a big timber tract, a remote hunting camp, or a quiet river place.
