The Land in New Madrid County

New Madrid County spreads along the Mississippi River in the lower Bootheel, its ground made of the deep, fertile alluvium that defines the delta. The land lies flat and rich, planted heavily in cotton, soybeans, corn, and rice, much of it irrigated and cut through with the drainage ditches that keep this low country farmable. For the farmland investor, this is textbook productive delta soil. Recreation centers on waterfowl: flooded fields, sloughs, and river backwaters draw ducks and geese, and doves gather along field edges in early season. Timber is scarce, so the appeal is cropland and wingshooting rather than deer woods. New Madrid is a working agricultural county where the river's old floodplain still sets the terms.
